Sixfields Finals, Under-17 Boys:

Obelisk United 1 Welford Victoria 2

Ten-man Welford Victoria won a competitive final against Obelisk United under the Sixfields floodlights.

Things looked to be going sweetly for Obelisk when Daniel Callaway fired them into a first-half lead.

Welford equalised when Ryan Goodband scored to force the game into extra-time, but then things seemed to swing Obelisk's way again when Welford had a man sent-off.

But the Vics shrugged off going down a man to score again and take the cup.

Tom Walpole was the hero for the winners, thrashing home what proved to be the winner in the first half of extra-time.

The Victoria players and fans enjoyed their win.

WELFORD Victoria's under-17s have grabbed a glorious double this season.

They were crowned champions of their youth league division, having won all but two games, the other results being a draw and a solitary defeat.

They then marched all the way to the league cup final held at Northampton Town’s Sixfields Stadium – and emerged victorious from that too to complete the double.

They beat Obelisk United 2-1 in extra time.

Welford conceded the first goal on 44 minutes to go into the break behind, but came out strong in the second half, showing the crowd what excellent football they can play.

After hitting the post, the bar and having a ball cleared off the line, Ryan Goodband eventually found the back of the net with ten minutes of normal time to go, forcing extra time.

Despite being a player down, Welford pushed forward continually and five minutes into the added period man of the match Tom Walpole headed home what proved to be the winner.

After the final whistle the Welford youngsters were presented with winners’ medals and the league cup.

An exciting tie had been watched by hordes of friends, family and the communities.

From the match at Sixfields the Welford squad went straight to the Elizabethan Restaurant in their village for the club’s annual dinner and presentation night.

Award winners were: most improved player Andy Axon; top goal scorer Ryan Goodband; manager’s players Mark Cadman and Adam Stirling (joint); players’ player – three received the same number of votes, Ryan Goodband, Tom Walpole and Mikey Hewitt.

Team manager Clare Walpole thanked the players for their commitment and dedication this season.

She said: “They have matured into an excellent footballing team and they thoroughly deserve all they have achieved this season.

“They have worked extremely hard, are a pleasure to coach and manage and are a credit to themselves, their families and Welford Victoria FC.

“Congratulations and well done, boys. We look forward to going into the countywide under-18s league next season.”
